Carolyn Kim is a public relations professional with a PhD in communication. Her dissertation focused on credibility and public relations.

Career

Kim is a seasoned PR expert with a specialization in leadership and brand credibility. Her early career included agency experience, working with global and national non-profits. She helped guide the agency with client services in digital marketing, including search engine optimization and organic social media initiatives.

She later transitioned into higher education, where she helped create a traditional BA program in public relations, as well as a graduate and online undergraduate degree in PR. She has published more than 15 peer-reviewed journals and authored several books focused on strategic communication, digital strategy, and brand communication. During her time as a university faculty member, she was a national speaker, served on multiple boards, and served as a private consultant for business leaders and startups.

Kim joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2022, bringing her background in education and PR to her role. She currently works in STEM Education, External Affairs, and University Partnerships as a communication partner. Her role allows her to provide leadership counsel, innovate strategies, and explore new opportunities to amplify PNNL’s impact.

Research

Kim has published research on a range of topics, including musculoskeletal tissue engineering, bioprinting for bone tissue engineering, and the influence of electron beam sterilization on in vivo degradation of beta-TCP/PCL. She has also published research on the development of a room-temperature printable hydrogel bioink for extrusion bioprinting.

She is currently a research scientist at Genesis Therapeutics and a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Her research at Stanford focuses on adaptive experimental designs for clinical trials. She is developing adaptive experimental designs that strategically adjust treatment assignment probabilities during the trial as outcomes information becomes available. These designs aim to improve patient outcomes and identify high-dimensional heterogeneous subgroups with statistical significance.

In 2022, Kim joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), bringing her expertise to STEM Education, External Affairs, and University Partnerships as a communication partner. At PNNL, she focuses on cross-team collaboration, communication management, and PR to drive awareness, values, and action among key stakeholders.
