Pushmeet Kohli

Pushmeet Kohli is a highly regarded computer and machine learning scientist and the Vice President of Research at Google DeepMind, where he leads the "Secure and Reliable AI" and "AI for Science and Sustainability" teams.

Early Life and Education

Kohli grew up in Dehradun, India, in the foothills of the Himalayas, and moved to the U.K. to study. He received his education at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, and Oxford Brookes University, where he was awarded a PhD in 2007, supervised by Philip Torr. He then became a Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge.

Career

Before joining DeepMind in 2017, Kohli spent nearly 11 years at Microsoft, where he worked in labs in Seattle, Cambridge, and Bangalore. During his time at Microsoft, he took on various roles, including being a technical advisor to Rick Rashid, the Chief Research Officer of Microsoft. He eventually became the director of research at the Cognition group, where he aimed to build AI systems that could carry out almost all types of tasks that humans can do.

At DeepMind, Kohli established the Safe and Reliable AI team, later renamed the Responsible and Reliable AI team, which focuses on addressing the safety issues that arise with the deployment of ML models. He also leads the AI for Science team, which uses AI to solve significant scientific challenges.

Research and Awards

Kohli's research interests centre on using AI to solve real-world problems, particularly in the life sciences, to accelerate research and understand and intervene in diseases. He actively researches new techniques to ensure that AI systems are safe, reliable, and trustworthy. His other research interests include 3D Reconstruction and Rendering, Probabilistic Programming, Interpretable and Verifiable Knowledge Representations from Deep Models, and Conversation agents for Task completion.

Kohli has received numerous awards and recognition for his research, including:

His papers have appeared in conferences in the fields of machine learning, computer vision, game theory, and human-computer interaction, and have been covered by popular media outlets such as Wired, Forbes, BBC, New Scientist, and MIT Technology Review.

Notable Projects

- FunSearch: discovering algorithms by using LLMs to search over program space.
